Sue Hammond and Cathy Royal's book, "Lessons from the Field,"is one of the best I know. And, should it be any help, here's an article I've written on how we developed and used 'Appreciative Planning and Action' (APA) in Nepal and Sri Lanka, which includes several practical applications. The use of APA in the battle against HIV/AIDS is being successfully done in conjuction with Worth, the Pact Women's Empowerment Inititiative begun in Nepal and now being replicated in Africa. AI-PRA Journey & Photos (Peace Corps-Mar02) [AI-PRA.doc 1.2MB] Let me know if I can be of further assistance. Best wishes, Mac Odell ------------------------------------- Malcolm J. One of the best and fullest places to find resources and articles on AI is at the AI Commons website. This website is designed for the fullest sharing of AI cases, articles, tools and links. If you have some time, please browse the site. Much of it is focued on NGO and development work. Below are some of the links which may be of interest to you: http://ai.cwru.edu/practice/toolsTrainingDetail.cfm?coid=1314 http://ai.cwru.edu/practice/toolsTrainingDetail.cfm?coid=186 http://ai.cwru.edu/practice/toolsTrainingDetail.cfm?coid=1316 http://ai.cwru.edu/intro/classics.cfm http://ai.cwru.edu/intro/bestcases.cfm http://ai.cwru.edu/practice/organization.cfm?sector=23 http://ai.cwru.edu/practice/organization.cfm?sector=22 http://ai.cwru.edu/practice/nonprofit.cfm http://ai.cwru.edu/practice/bibAiArticlesDetail.cfm?coid=385 http://ai.cwru.edu/join/new.cfm I would also recomment that you contact Mac Odell. He has a wealth of knowledge about AI and development work. He has done AI work all over Asia. I hope you find these helpful and please let me know if you need anything else. Dawn Dole

The sources of information that you have posted are the ones that I too would have recommended. Mac Odell and Saleela Paktar are definitely experts in AI applied at the community level. You may also want to look at the work being done by the Mountain Institute using Appreciative Participatory Planning and Action: e.g., http://www.snowleopardconservancy.org/appa.htm. I understand that the Mountain Institute provides training in this area as well. In terms of practical advice, I think that the Positive Path captures IISD's lessons learnt from our work with Saleela in India. Within Canada, some of the key issues raised during our project with Skownan First Nation were ensuring the support of community leaders, the value in training local people to lead the inquiry, and the effectiveness of video as a means of communicating a community's values and visions to decision-makers. Warm regards, Jo-Ellen |

If you are interested to read about how a community in Nepal has worked together using Ai, have a look at some of the articles on our website, http://www.lasadev.com/_pages/articles.htm. Especially the one about 'changing the Dialogue' that appeared in the Ai Practitioner. |

Hello everybody. I would love to hear from anybody that is practicing APPA/APA/AI with villages in Afghanistan or Central Asia, and whether or not anybody knows of any training workshops focused specifically on international development (in particular, in the South-Central Asia regions). Thanks! |
